More Piffle from Christian Intellectuals

09/08/16 , by Dissidens, Categories: Evangelical culture

There is lots of chatter these days about cultural engagement, the difference between shaping discussions from the center as opposed to shaping discussions from the periphery, and about the theological and philosophical foundations of some trivialized issue.

You might want to go here to listen to two blowhards pretending they have a handle on the problem.

Very comical…if constant picking at a scab can ever be considered comical.

Did he just call Russell Kirk an evangelical?

I think I just heard the ghost of E. J. Carnell: “We need prestige desperately…”

It’s possible; I didn’t take it that way. I understood him to be referring to the way Buckley, Jr. introduced more precise definitions of a conservative mind.

Incidentally, one way out of their mental bog is actually to read and understand Kirk’s The Conservative Mind: from Burke to Santayana [Eliot].

Evanjellicles are not conservative, and if Mohler and Jacobs had had the clarity of mind to understand this, a more helpful conversation might have ensued.

I blame the schools and the people they disgorge.

Prestige is the key word. Evanjellicles don’t want to be thinkers, they want to be popular. It’s like Smalltown Junior High never ended.
